Eptifibatide Injection

Cardiovascular

Eptifibatide Injection

Eptifibatide Injection is a potent antiplatelet medication used primarily in the management of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and during percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) to prevent blood clots. As a cyclic heptapeptide, it mimics a portion of the fibrinogen molecule, effectively blocking the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor on the surface of platelets. This action inhibits platelet aggregation, reducing the risk of thrombotic cardiovascular events.

    product description

    Chemical Composition:
Eptifibatide is a synthetic peptide that acts as a reversible antagonist of the platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor, crucial for platelet aggregation.
    Mechanism of Action:
By binding to the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor, Eptifibatide prevents fibrinogen from linking platelets together, which is a final common pathway for platelet aggregation. This inhibition is critical in reducing the formation of arterial thromboses, especially in the setting of ACS and PCI.
    Indications and Usage:
Eptifibatide is indicated for the treatment of patients with ACS, including those undergoing PCI, to reduce the risk of the initial occurrence of myocardial infarction (MI) or death. It is also used in patients with unstable angina not responding to conventional medical therapy when PCI is planned.
    Administration and Dosage:
The administration involves an initial IV bolus followed by a continuous infusion for the duration of the PCI procedure and up to 12 to 24 hours afterward, depending on the patient's clinical status and response.
    Efficacy and Outcomes:
Clinical trials have demonstrated that Eptifibatide significantly reduces the risk of a combined endpoint of death or MI in patients with ACS and those undergoing PCI, compared to standard therapy alone.
    Side Effects:
Common side effects include bleeding complications, thrombocytopenia, hypotension, and, less frequently, allergic reactions. Careful monitoring of bleeding and platelet counts is essential during therapy.
    Contraindications and Precautions:
Contraindicated in patients with a history of bleeding disorders, severe hypertension, major surgery within the preceding six weeks, or hypersensitivity to eptifibatide or any component of the product. Use with caution in patients at high risk of bleeding or those on concomitant anticoagulants.
